Underdog: Cadillac ATS-V

US carmaker Cadillac is already struggling for years to gain foothold in Europe and battle German domination in the premium D, E, and F-segments. And while their underperformance was somewhat understandable five years ago, with every new model Cadillac seems to get closer to the competition. A personal favorite of mine is the Cadillac ATS-V, and therefore it seems right to spend some time talking about it. Because it certainly deserves more than it’s getting on the continent.

2016-cadillac-ats-v-21

Cadillac positions the ATS-V as a competitor for the BMW M4, Audi RS4 (yet to be announced) and Mercedes C63 AMG. Therefore, its a premium d-segment car. The CTS(-V) operates a level higher, and the brand new CT6 is top of the line. The Americans certainly invested time and money to make their bid as good as possible; with an attractive and aggressive exterior (which I personally think is a job well done), modern interior, and sophisticated mechanics.

2016-cadillac-ats-v-rear-three-quarter

Engine wise, there is a biturbo V6 sporting 470 hp, which hurls the ATS from 0 to 100 in 3.9 seconds. It only stops accelerating at 304 kph. This is on par or better than the competiton. Cadillac really tried to appeal to European buyers, who prefer sophisticated and smooth engines over naturally aspirated V8s with enormous displacement. Where it still lags behind a bit, is the gearbox. The 8 speed automatic isn’t as refined and quick as the one in the BMW M4, its most important nemesis. But it compensates with very good handling, caused by direct and engaging steering and a well balanced chassis and suspension. Magnetic Ride Control is Cadillacs term for adaptive dampers, and it works great. It causes the American to keep up with the BMW, a very important feat. Where that never was the case with ‘old’ Cadillac due to sluggishness, rolling over, and unresponsive steering the Bavarian now encountered an equal.

When it comes to interior quality, the ATS-V is adequate, but not great. All modern systems are there, but it still doesnt ooze the same quality as its German counterparts. Things are better than previous years, though.

The biggest challenge for the ATS-V is not to win from its rivals in terms of performance; it already did. But the price tag is simply too steep. In the Netherlands, the car is available from 127 grand. That is more than the BMW; which means most European customers will most likely go for the M4. If GM is serious about their luxury brand selling decent numbers over here, it would be better to position the different models slightly below the competition. When an ATS-V suddenly costs 90 grand, there is a real chance BMW, Audi, and Mercedes customers want to save 10 or 20 thousand and go for the alternative option. For now, the ATS-V is only interesting for the used market, since it depreciates quickly and makes for a nice deal in a few years. A sad, and undeserved, truth.

Special attention for the BMW i8

A few years back, BMW made a very impressive entree in the field of electric vehicles with the i3 and i8 cars. Where the i3 was the more serious car, available as a pure EV and as EV with range extender (a petrol powerplant to generate power for the batteries) the i8 had to catch attention and make sure everyone was conviced BMW was serious about its new electric line-up (the i-series).

12-2015-bmw-i8-fd-1

But it would really not be fair to reduce the i8 to the role of driving billboard. Because the i8 was and is an amazing car in its own right. It showed a conservative German carmaker still possessed the knowledge, will, and capability to create something truly revolutionary. And revolutionary, it was. Its amazing futuristic design with the ‘Lamborghini’-doors and the way wind is guided over (and through) the car is breathtaking.

lead5-2015-bmw-i8-fd

And thats not where innovation stops. The interior is created from very new and unprecedented materials like special fabrics and renewable plastics. Instruments are fully digital and adaptive, years before Audi and Volkswagen introduced these into their mass production cars. And the engine also is a very special, of course. Its not a full EV like the i3, but basically a very innovative hybrid. It can drive 30 kms on electric power only, and then switches to a hybrid configuration. The petrol powerplant is a 3 cylinder turbocharged variant, sporting more than 200 horsepower. Using performance parts and clever sound engineering (both mechanical and speaker-wise) it sounds ánd performs like one of BMWs famous inline-sixes. But at an MPG-rate which would never be possible with a regular six cylinder engine. When power / sport mode is selected, the full potential of the hybrid drivetrain is released, causing true sportscar-like acceleration (4.4 seconds 0-100) and the instrument cluster changes to an orange theme.

It’s a wish of the editor (in chief) of AutoExperience to once drive the i8 and experience it in real life. If you’re reading this and actually have the budget to acquire one; I’d advise in favor of it (starts around 130k). It’s an amazing car which will not look outdated or aging for years to come, and deserves its own special place between other sports and high performance cars.

…and yes, there is a Spyder on its way too!

Configurator: Porsche Macan (pt.1)

In this new series, we from AutoExperience use the online configurator of a specific car brand and model in order to get the nicest overall package. To get the best price / performance and price / equipment is the ultimate goal. Prices are according to the Dutch configurator, but we’ll advise on how to convert this to your own country.

03

In this first episode, we go into a relatively new car, namely Porsche’s offering in the mid-size SUV segment, the Macan. Based on the Audi Q5 (also recently renewed) Porsche is offering an attractive and sporty exterior with powerful engines and top notch interior quality. This definitely makes the car an expensive piece of steel, so it’s not for everyone. Potential buyers? Think:

  • Porsche customers wanting more practicality
  • Porsche customers who think the Cayenne is too mondane, large, or pricy
  • German SUV buyers wanting to step up their game when it comes to dynamic driving and overall quality
  • German SUV buyers who just like the Porsche brand more than the obligatory Audi, BMW, or Mercedes

There are always additional specific demands when shopping for a new car. Some want it to be as business-fit as possible, other like a more daring design. Same goes for diesel versus petrol. In this case; we’re not being too difficult a customer. We are owners of a small company and have the budget to afford a bit more than the usual lease-A6. The wife already has her own (practical) car, so we don’t need to think about that either. Because the Macan will be our (only) daily driver, it needs to well equipped but not too tinhorn since it might give the wrong impression at work. Mileage is no issue, so petrol is our preference.

Starting off with the engines, we opt for the Macan Turbo. There is also a Macan (regular) and a Macan S, but we’re a bit disappointed with their performance. Acceleration of these models is comparable to the common Volvo V60 D6 plugin and the Mercedes C350e plugin, and we wouldnt want that with a car costing >30k more. The premium for the Turbo is hefty but not unreasable and already contains some goodies we want anyway. Exterior is also more modern for the Turbo, while its not as screaming as the GTS. The Turbo performance package is overdone for an SUV, according to us.

Technical:

  • 3.6 litre biturbo V6 with 440 hp / 550 Nm
  • 0-100 in 4.8 / top 266 (enough to safely beat cars limited at 250)
  • PDK dual clutch automatic transmission
  • 1900 kg

Additional specification:

  • ‘Agate Grey’ metallic (sporty, but decent)
  • 21 inch ‘911 Turbo’ alloys (more distinguished and elegant than stock wheels)
  • ‘Turbo’ Exterior pack (matte black accents)
  • Nature leather ‘Espresso’
  • Adaptive Sport Seats
  • LED lights with PDLS+
  • Park Assist front + rear (no cam needed, its not a limo)
  • Panoramic Sunroof
  • Roofrails matte black
  • Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus PTV+ (rear differentials)
  • Sport Chrono
  • BLIS / LDWS / ACC
  • Heated Seats front
  • Side Airbags rear
  • Gauges Luxor Beige

…To be continued!

The Gorgeous Audi A5/S5 Convertible

After the all-new A5 Coupe, Audi now gave us the new A5 (and S5) Cabriolet. According to us, its a beautiful car. Not revolutionary, but a very polished product which combines elegant and timeless design with the latest technologies.

Engine wise, the potential buyer has the choice of three gasoline and three diesel powerplants. Things kick off with the 2.0 turbocharged (TFSI) inline four with 190 hp. The same engine is also available with 252 horses. TDI-wise, again 190 hp in the 2.0 litre four cylinder listing, but there is also a very smooth 3.0 inline six with 218 or 286 hp available. Top of the line is the S5 Cabriolet, with a 3.0 V6 TFSI sporting 354 hp. The fabric top can be opened or closed with speeds up to 50 kph.

This is the Atlas

This week, Volkswagen unveiled the Atlas: A new full-size SUV which is going to be sold in the Americas and Asia.

1pxya5mblo25_480

The Atlas is the second SUV from Volkswagen with the new, more brutal front, after the recently updated Tiguan. It’s important to note that the Atlas is NOT the successor of the aging Touareg, that car will be replaced with another all-new model. This suggests that Volkswagen plans to sell the Atlas in specific regions, and the new Touareg in others (like Europe).

k3cyu1sbx1jm_480

The car will be build in the United States, based on European MQB platform, sports seven seats, and will initially be available with two engines. First is a turbocharged 2.0 four cylinder (TSI) with 238 hp, the second a 3.6 litre inline six, sporting 280 hp. No V8 or Diesel (TDI) powerplants for now.

When it comes to other features, the Atlas can be fitted with the usual range of driver assistance systems like ACC, BLIS, LDWS, Park Assist, and VW Virtual Cockpit. The car is expected in dealerships summer 2017, prices yet to be announced.

Suzuki showcases brand new Ignis

Japanese compact car maker Suzuki will introduce a brand new Ignis at the upcoming Paris Motor Show (Autosalon de Paris). which will be held from 1-16 October. The car’s design certainly has our attention. While the previous Ignis (disappeared from markets years ago) couldn’t really steal our hearts, which is still an understatement, this is something different.

suzuki-ignis-2017-02

We weren’t too fond of Suzuki’s latest models released on the European market, especially the Baleno and Celerio were pretty dull looking vehicles, like the car maker wanted to copy Dacia in building ‘functional-but-not-very-inspiring’ cars. We’re very happy Suzuki came back to that thought with the very powerful and eccentric Ignis.

suzuki-ignis-2017-01

Design-wise it sports the same language we saw earlier on the Alto Works Concept, a model never released on the European mainland.

styling2-1

Details of the new midi-SUV are very scarce as of now, but we guess Suzuki will position it in the b-segment, competing with cars like the Renault Captur en Peugeot 2008. Engine wise we only know it comes with a new engine technology called ‘DualJet’, which is 1.2 litres large and sports 90 hp (most likely a 3 cylinder powerplant). The Ignis should be in showrooms Q1 2017, we expect prices and more details close to the end of this year.

2017 Toyota Mirai price stays same, fuel-cell car adds new color (REPOST)

The Toyota Mirai hydrogen fuel-cell car will enter its second model year in the U.S. virtually unchanged, including its pricing. The 2017 Mirai continues to be Toyota’s technology halo car, the highest-selling fuel-cell car in the U.S., though it remains limited to certain California regional markets. Its base price remains $58,365, the same as the […]

Alfa Romeo Giulia Veloce

Alfa’s Giulia line-up had a pretty large gap between the ordinary ‘volume’-models and the excellent Quadrifoglio Verde, which is supposed to be an M3 killer with 510 horsepower out of a pumped V6 turbo. Until now, because Alfa decided to bridge that gap with a brand new ‘Veloce’-model.

fbkywcdb8oqe_480

This Veloce comes with more aggressive bodywork and a 280 hp turbocharged four cylinder. Its also specced with Q4 all wheel drive, 19 inch 5 hole ‘Alfa-Style’ wheels, and a few custom interior niceties. Shifting goes by an 8-speed automatic.

043yyewbsnxj_480

Price is yet to be announced at this moment, but our guess is the Veloce models will start at around 50 grand in euros, which would make sense when compared to competitors like the Audi A4 S-Line and Mercedes C300 with AMG-package.

Mercedes-Maybach S600 Pullman Guard

Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman Guard.

Soon available for every dictator; the new S600 Pullman Guard by Mercedes and Maybach. Lets dissect that name for a bit. Mercedes-Maybach is the badge on the most exquisite versions of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class, but those are not necessarily lengthened. Thats where the Lang-versions and Pullman-label comes in. Pullman is different from Lang, because it has four seats in opposite position, where Lang version only has two seats and a boatload of legroom.

Mercedes-Maybach S 600 Pullman Guard.

Since it weighs more than 5000 kilos, the 600 engine actually has work to do. the V12 boasts around 1000Nm of torque, which should help it to the limited top speed of 160 kp/h as soon as possible. Then the Guard designation. It stands for all the armoured versions Mercedes offers, so it also has E-Class Guards and G-Guards. This particular one has the VR9 rating, which means it withstands automatic rifle crossfire and TNT up to 15 kilos, if its positioned no closer than 2 metres from the vehicle. In other words, when you drive over an IED that size you’re probably still toast.

It’s no tank, but probably the closest you can get to president Obama’s Cadillac-based Beast. Price: Around 1.5 million euros.
